A Mom of a working teen

Here I sit ... the clock says 11:21 p.m. on this computer. Alyx is at work and am waiting for a call to pick her up. We have been buring the candle at both ends so long, that the wick was gone by 6 p.m. today. But ... here I sit. I caught a nap on the road (no, I wasn't driving!) between Brock's buddies house and Home Depot. Must have been all of 10 minutes or so.

Home Depot is our new home away from home. Guess what that means anybody? HUNDREDS of feet of trim is up in the house. Tonight the floors were started. We decided that they needed something. Will post a new pic of the living room when it is complete. It will be beautiful ... my hubby is such a crafty guy! Last week we did the living top to nearly bottom. I feel like I now live in a world void of color, but the room feels bigger! And ... I am still struggling with picture frames. I love pictures of people. I usually have framed photos everywhere. I have run out of spaces for them. I keep moving the pile from floor spot to different floor spot because I can't decide what to part with.

Last Tuesday we played like it was vacation from school. These photos are actually taken at 12:30 a.m. Jari, Alyx, Brock & I played several games of Settlers. Tia had friends over to celebrate her birthday and they had "hair stuff" going on in the living room at the same time. Fun times!

Today was garage sale day. Considering my usual luck with sales ... today was a boon. Let's hope for great success tomorrow. Jenny and girls came and spent the night last night ... setting up the sale, visiting and munching Valentine candy 'til much too late.

Must go get Alyx.

Have a great day/week/month/year all!

Anita

Not the family room. Whoever guessed that one is wrong! That is my living room. It now has completely different flooring. That room is DONE!!! The kitchen is now under construction at 9:18 pm and will probably be done by morning. The man is on a roll!!

The garage sale was good. So I have tons of stuff left over, but I actually sold some stuff and made enough to fill my gas tank 2.5 times!!! Yippee!!

Anita, how far did Jari get Saturday night? The floor looks awesome so far, I can't wait to see when it's all done! Frans wants to put that in all the bedrooms now. The carpet in there is beyond disgusting.
School started again today. Of course the girls didn't get to sleep until after 10, so our morning was a little rough. After two weeks of late nights, and sleeping in till at LEAST 9 every day, it will be an adjustment this week getting up early again! But Lindsey was pretty fired up to go back and see all her friends!
more later. Hope everyone has a great week!

Anita,
What did you put down for the flooring? Wood?

I want wood flooring in my house. No carpet for me - it's bad for allergies and asthma etc.

Can't wait to see more pictures. Your house looks very different.
Why would you want to leave it now when everything is being done. Your supposed to stay there and enjoy it now and move when it needs to be redone.

By the way, Walter, Sylvia, Randy, Shawn, and I have decided we are all moving to Alaska too. Walter was planning on packing up yesterday and being on the road today, but thought it would be better to rent a cargo aircraft from the military and we would just drive our vehicles on, take the goats, cats, and dogs leave the cows, and head to Alaska. It was a beautiful thought while it lasted, but now here I am, sitting at work, and dreaming of moving to Alaska.

The living room & kitchen are done, 1/3 of the family room. I'm sure that will be done tonight. Then the nasty hallway with 9 doorways! Doesn't that sound like fun?

The flooring looks like cherry planks, but isn't wood. It is actually a vinyl/laminate that goes down incredibly easy and virtually nothing is "stuck" to the floor. The edges stick to each other. I'll post a picture so you can see it. It comes in 3 different colors. I didn't want light colored piney stuff and the other was too cabiney looking. Will probably look really good in a log house in Alaska tho'! I'll volunteer Jari to help put in your flooring up there! Our house was built in 1959 I believe. There can't be a straight wall in here ... or we haven't found one yet! We ran all the "planks" diagonally in the main living area. The bedrooms we are going to do in straight runs. Having a big ol' honkin bbq on Sunday over here. Motivation is a fine thing!

As far as wanting to stay in the house ... I am so happily pitching stuff you haven't any idea! Organizing things before I pack them, etc. It is so much fun! I'm going to start in a new place without all this junk that I have collected for years. Except for all those umpteen special things ... white dishes, tea sets, angels, scrapbooks ... I cleaned out the attic on Friday afternoon. Tia stood at the bottom of the ladder & grabbed a few things. The rest I'd yell "stand back" and down it would fly. It felt so incredibly good. Then came the garbage bags. There were a few good things up there ... does anyone need a 2 room tent? (on second thought ... perhaps I should pack it so we have somewhere to live ...)

You might want to leave the goats behind when you climb on that cargo plane of yours. Am sure there are plenty to be had where we're all heading. Once we're settled in, all of you hop in a commercial flight and come visit for 2 weeks. We'll convince all of you right quick. Just think! A merging of congregations ... wouldn't that be sumpin!

School started here today as well. This lady here should be teaching instead of blogging!

Isn't he just way too sweet? I had our wonderful neighbor come over and check out the floors this evening when the slave was finished. And ... she is a massage therapist ... and my massage table happened to be up in the living room ... and the slave got his knees massaged. Slave labor benefits just ain't what they use to be! My floors are absolutely wonderful. Me thinks he just got lots of practice for that wonderful house in Alaska.

Being as Shawn never looks at the blog, I will answer for him, Jari. The reality is that the Lindula men are slave drivers and this "Kuoppala girl" gets put to work=). There is no vice versa in this scenario. If I said "a little more please" he would quit promptly =)
However, he is planning to finish the house this winter. I saw some wood outside when I got home and new sheetrock leaning up in the house. If I don't say a thing and secretly watch, the house may be completed. This girl has learned that not saying anything is what may get the project done. Reverse slave driving?
Shawn asked me the other day what I want for flooring. I don't want carpet, but other than that am fine with anything. He doesn't want vinyl. We have ceramic tile for the porch, hallway, and bathroom, but I didn't want it put in until the walls are mudded, primed, and painted or it would make the tile a mess. He is maybe -wouldn't want to commit to it - buying birch hard wood flooring for the living room and bedrooms. The kitchen is going to be ceramic tile. I will be so excited when I can sweep and mop a floor. It's so hard to do that on our current plywood flooring.
I wiish I had a digital camera to post pictures, but the best option is I will let everyone know when it is done and you can come to visit to see it. Shawn is having his helper Steve help him with our house this winter. He was going to start when his other projects are finished. He has one roof left to do, but doubt he is going to do it this late in the game. It may be held off for first thing this spring.
Happy houseworking to everyone!!!

Heather it might not be a bad idea to have shawn look into the flooring that jutti and aneta put in. I thought I would never put in vinyl flooring either but after seeing theirs and feeling it (first thing I did was take off my shoes and walked on it) I was a changed man. I am considering it for the family room and the girls rooms. It is not the same as a real wood floor when you walk on it but that is one of the quality's that I like about it. It looks amazingly real but has a softer feel to it. It is not as loud as real wood and also, not as cold on the feet if you like walking around bare foot like I do. My only concern that I need to find out is how much traffic it can handle before it starts to look worn out.

Kuoppala and Inlaws said...

I don't want to convince Shawn of not putting in hard wood floors. That's what I have always wanted.

Doesn't vinyl flooring get ripped, cut or whatever pretty easily? I'm married to a man who doesn't like to take off his shoes/boots and will march through the house with them on, leaving a trail behind him. It doesn't help that our driveway is tailings - some of them really hurt in a bare foot - I hope that it doesn't scratch the wood too badly. The nice part about hour house is that the heat is in the crawl space so it keeps the floor nice and warm. It is only cold on the porch floor as it isn't wide open in the crawl space between the porch and the rest of the house. Our heat is just blown into the crawl space with registers cut around the house. We have 2 radiators in the living room, but otherwise, the heat just rises from down below.

How is the project going in AZ?

Heather, we put pre-finnished hard wood in the upstairs bedrooms. when installing it yourself, it is much cheaper. In addition, if you watch the finnishes, you can get some that are warranteed (sp?) quite well. Just another option to consider. -b

We are actually getting somewhat of a good deal on the hard wood flooring. It is going to be bought from soneone who makes it, so it will be cheaper than getting it from the store. However, after all the work is done, it may become the equivalent of what you could buy it for. He has been doing price checks on it, but is thinking of going through Jacobsen to get it. The plan now is to finish the rest of the house with the mudding, taping, priming, painting, then putting in the flooring. He has put in some can lights - a total of 6 of them - in the living room. Now, the only other lights we need put in, are a couple over the sink but that has to wait until new cupboards are put in. The house is progressing!!!
