i'm going up to Rainy Lake on the western edge of the Boundary Waters for several days. the fire burning up there is pretty far from where i'll be, but i thought i'd use it as an excuse to share these photos anyway. - liz

Wow, what pictures! Yes, where
are they from? Are you going to
eat cold food in fear of starting
another fire? Is this the dry
stuff from wind damage a few years
ago that they wouldn't let machinery in to clean it up? We
were worried something like this
would happen but don't know if
that's the area where fire is. dk

I think you're right about this being the area that they wouldn't let machinery in to clean it up. It is a few miles from the Gunflint Trail is what I've heard in the news. The sad part is that there is no rain here to stop the fire. The other day, I went out to work and smelled fire. I actually looked around at my house to make sure nothing was burning. Everything is so dry. Then, when I was driving, was worried that something was wrong with my car. Realized later that the wind blew the smoke down this way. Later, the wind shifted, couldn't smell anything, then shifted again and we could smell a bonfire everywhere we went. They are bringing in many people to fight the fire; many are here from different states. Heard that we have fire fighters here from Kentucky who are "gruond pounders", stationed in Cloquet in case another fire starts. They go ahead and clear brush, etc.to try and stop the fire from spreading. It would be interesting to see the damage done, after the fire is out.
There was another fire around here last night. Takala's were baling Shawn's hay. Jim called and said it will be a while before they can finish. The tractor started on fire. The tractor is totalled as is the computer to operate the baler. The 2nd insurance claim for them this week. The other day, a cow was hit and killed on the road.

the pics were taken by some area photographers and more are available online at http://www.boreal.org/fireinfo/Cavity_Lake_Fire/photo_gallery.html

yes, the fire is in the blow-down area - but fire isn't all bad either - and i've been out of the loop for a few days, but last i'd heard they figured this fire might burn until a "seasonal event" (i.e. winter) changes things and meanwhile the firefighters are just trying to contain it.

rainy lake was beautiful and sunny and warm. very nice. -e.

Who would I write to to say that we worried what would happen when
they wouldn't let the downed trees
be removed? dk
