I can't believe it. They elected
a convicted felon!! Alaska that
is. Well, all the count wasn't in
yet but it looked like he would
get it. A question: Once a
representative from Alaska went
down in a plane in Alaska. I think
that politician was related to Joe
Begich of Eveleth. I wonder if the
one who was running against Stevens
was a son of the Begich who was lost so many years ago in that
plane crash. Any knowledge? dk

How did it feel voting for the first time Amanda? That's awesome! ~ Regarding Begich. I read an article where someone had asked Joe Begich a couple questions about his nephew. But someone else will have to answer that question cuz that is simply all I know.

Sorry about being so pokey in my response - mom, let me know if you get this, otherwise i'll email you.

Nick Begich was Joe Begich's brother. His plane went down in some remote area of Alaska in October 1972 as he campaigned for re-election (for his second term) to Congress from Alaska. With him was LA Congressman Hale Boggs (who is political comentator Cokie Roberts' dad) - Boggs was House Majority Leader at the time. The plane wreckage was never found and all four on board were presumed dead. Because of that high-profile loss, planes are now required to have a beacon thing to be able to better track them. Nick Begich won the race even tho he was dead. His opponent was Don Young, who won a special election afterwards and who won re-election for the umpteenth time a few days ago.

Mark Begich is Nick Begich's son. He has been serving as mayor of Anchorage. Oberstar and others say the Iron Range will have another Senator in DC if Alaska elects Begich.

Thanks Elizabeth. I got it. Had
an idea that's who he was. Didn't
know Cokie Roberts at the time so
didn't realize it was her dad also
on the plane. Not that I know her
now either but I know who she is! dk
